Taking Health Services to the Doorsteps of People - Reaching the Unreached
 

Khoj Health Center, Village Kot Mughal - 2011

Location: Village Kot Mughal, District Sheikhupura, Punjab, Pakistan. One of the most underdeveloped and worst crime hit areas in the country. There is no road link to 20 surrounding villages.

Need: Absence of health care services in surrounding 30 villages. Women delivered babies on the way to doctors on the bumpy pathways. Many a patients died without receiving medical aid. Women’s health the most neglected.


Construction and establishment of Health Center: A woman donated land. Construction completed in May 2008. The first patient served on July 6, 2008.



Services:
 Services available at a physician’s clinic
 Availability of medicines at Khoj Pharmacy
 Tests-urine complete, blood sugar, pregnancy test, hepatitis B & C tests, malaria and ECG
 Basic emergency services
 First aid for pesticide poisoning
 Medical camps providing consultation, medicines and strip based tests facility


No. of patients served: Total 5241

Geographical coverage: The outreach is to 30 villages. 46 medical camps have also been organized in the area.

Pharmacy: All essential medicines, family planning items and personal hygiene materials are made available.


Testing lab:
374 patients have benefitted from the services.
Growth monitoring of children: Growth monitoring of children was initiated in December 2010. A number of children were found with alarming health indicators.

Family planning services will be provided at the Health Center


Immunization
More than 70% of children below year 5 and women of reproductive age are immunized in the villages Kot Mughal and Thathi Bhanguaan


Staff: All Health Center staff, other than the doctor, are graduates of Khoj education program who later received training in nursing from Lahore.

Financial Support: Individual donations (one exception is Allied Bank Limited that is corporate donation) have made it possible to construct and run the Health Center.

Financial Support Needed for: Health Center running costs, ambulance for emergency patients, residential facility for doctor and one or two technical staff, establishment of gyne ward.
