  Khoj - Society for People's Education started its educational work in 1995 and was registered in January 2000. The Society works for adult and children's education through an alternative approach and methodology inspired by the principles of relevance and gender equity.  
 
 
   
 
 
  Khoj Methodology   Area Profile

The alternative methodology sees children at the center stage of education. It is highly participatory and involves children in the process of learning and teaching.

As a first step, codes are presented in the form of pictures and these codes represent a picture of every day situations, scenes or objects that have a direct relationship to the lives of the group members and the locality in which they live.

The socio economic picture in the selected area of Punjab is not very encouraging.

Although women are active in all spheres of work, their contribution is not recognized. Instead, their movement is restricted in the name of tradition and religion; their access to education is discouraged as education is seen as a means to freedom and independence.

How it all started? Why did the traditional teaching method fail? How did the alternative method evolve?

Nasira's first attempt at devising an education programme for illiterate women didn't work as well as Nasira had intended. But it was this set back which led to a method of teaching which is lauded throughout Pakistan and abroad.

"In critically assessing the Khoj methodology of teaching, it is vital to stress that it is not simply an innovative approach to teaching Urdu phonetically. It is a holistic approach to teaching and learning.

Students engage in a wide range of diverse curriculum strands that are meaningful, relevant to their context and daily lives."
